Rooted in Freedom: Why True Legalization in Wisconsin Must Include the Right to Grow

As Wisconsin growers, our lives revolve around dirt, weather, hard work, and deep respect for the land. We dedicate our days to cultivating a plant that has provided healing, relief, and economic vitality to communities across our state for generations.

Lately, though, it’s hard not to feel a sense of frustration when looking at the landscape surrounding hemp and cannabis in Wisconsin.

Every day, we see retail shop counters overflowing with hemp-derived THC products. Consumers can walk into a local store on Main Street, purchase an intoxicating product, and drive home—fully legal under current regulations.

Yet, if a local farmer wants to grow high-potency floral craft crops in our rich Wisconsin soil, or if a family wants to plant two or three herbal medicinal plants in their backyard garden, the law draws a hard line.

If Wisconsin is allowed to sell it, why aren’t we allowed to grow it?

Standing With Our Retail Partners

Before going any further, let’s be abundantly clear: We stand 100% behind our local retail shop partners.

Our retailers, dispensaries, and shop owners are small business heroes. They navigate ever-shifting regulations, keep local economies moving, and connect our communities with products that bring wellness and relief. They are our partners, our friends, and our supporters, and their success is our success.

The goal is not to pull the rug out from under retail shops—far from it. The goal is to point out that a system that allows retail sale while outlawing local cultivation is fundamentally incomplete.

Closing the Loophole to Open the Door for Real Legalization

There’s been understandable anxiety around the federal hemp ban and tightening regulations aimed at closing intoxicating hemp loopholes. Many retailers are worried, and rightfully so.

But when we look at the intent behind original hemp farm legislation, it was meant to foster natural wellness, industrial versatility, and sustainable agricultural opportunity—not to create an endless game of legal gymnastics around synthetic and derived cannabinoids.

Closing these loopholes isn't about hurting small businesses; it’s about forcing our state and country toward real, transparent, fully realized legalization.

Gray areas only keep us stuck in limbo. When we establish clear standards, we pave the way for a regulated, thriving industry where adult-use and medical cannabis are legally recognized for what they truly are.

Plant Medicine Belongs to the People: The Right to Home Grow

At its core, this isn't just about farm economics or retail sales—it's about personal liberty and human health.

Cannabis is plant medicine. For thousands of years, humans have tended herbs, flowers, and roots in home gardens to care for themselves and their loved ones. No state should ever stand between a person and their right to grow natural medicine in their own soil.

Imagine a Wisconsin where:

Patients and citizens can plant a few seed-grown plants alongside their tomatoes, basil, and lavender without fear of criminal charges.

Local farmers can cultivate organic, high-quality crops tailored specifically for our local markets.

Retailers can stock shelf space with pride, knowing their products are grown locally by their neighbors, tested safely, and backed by transparent laws.

Living in the "Dairyland" state—a place built on agriculture, self-reliance, and community strength—it makes no sense to deny Wisconsin citizens the right to cultivate a plant that grows so natively and abundantly here.

Wisconsin Should Not Settle

We cannot settle for partial access, temporary loopholes, or half-baked policies. We should not settle for a state of affairs where you can buy a product off a shelf, but planting the seed that creates it is considered a crime.

True progress takes persistence. It requires us to keep speaking up, educating our neighbors, contacting our representatives, and demanding comprehensive reform.

Let’s keep supporting our local retail shops. Let's keep celebrating every step toward wellness. But let’s also double down on our commitment to full legalization—one that honors the shopkeeper, empowers the farmer, and guarantees every Wisconsinite the freedom to grow plant medicine in their own garden.

The future is local, the future is grown, and with persistence, we will get there together.
