A Declaration of Independence for Cannabis 🌱
When in the course of human progress, it becomes evident that laws enacted by governing bodies have become destructive of the unalienable rights to liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and individual autonomy, particularly concerning the peaceable use and cultivation of the cannabis plant, a respectful declaration of independence from such oppressive statutes is warranted.
We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all individuals are endowed with the inherent right to personal liberty and the pursuit of well-being, which includes the freedom to make informed choices concerning their own bodies and the peaceful cultivation and consumption of natural substances, so long as such choices do not infringe upon the rights or safety of others.
The history of cannabis prohibition in these United States is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over individual choice and economic freedom. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world:
* Denied medical freedom, refusing access to a plant proven to alleviate suffering for countless patients.
* Obstructed economic prosperity, stifling a multi-billion dollar industry and preventing the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs and substantial tax revenues.
* Imposed unjust criminalization, leading to the arrest and incarceration of millions of citizens, disproportionately impacting marginalized communities, and destroying families and futures.
* Created dangerous black markets, fueling illicit trade and undermining public safety through unregulated products.
* Wasted taxpayer dollars, diverting immense resources from legitimate public safety needs to enforce an ineffective and harmful prohibition.
* Suppressed scientific inquiry, hindering comprehensive research into the full potential and benefits of the cannabis plant.
* Infringed upon agricultural freedom, preventing farmers from cultivating a versatile and sustainable crop with industrial applications.
In every stage of these oppressions, we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms; our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A government whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyranny is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
We, therefore, the undersigned citizens of these United States, appealing to the higher principles of liberty and justice for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People, solemnly publish and declare, That Cannabis is, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent from the shackles of federal and state prohibition; that all political connection between it and the antiquated laws that bind it is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as a Free and Independent substance, it has full Power to open legitimate markets, establish its rightful place in medicine and industry, and to do all other Acts and Things which Free and Independent substances may of right do.
And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of fundamental human rights, we mutually pledge to each other our voices, our efforts, and our unwavering commitment to justice.
